Mazda MX-5 Miata vs. Competitors for Sale in West Springfield, MA
There’s still a market for sporty convertible roadsters amid the increasingly popular SUV and crossover boom, and the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata stands front and center. This lightweight, rear-wheel drive two-seater has been around since 1989 and definitely has its fun-loving following. For the current model year, the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata retains its sporty heritage while still adapting to the times with the latest technology this industry has to offer. As a result, it’s the most exciting version of this car to date. Similar models like the Toyota 86, Fiat 124 Spider, and MINI Cooper Convertible try to outdo the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata, but it has a few advantages that keep it ahead of the curve.
Fuel Efficiency and Power
One of the areas where the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata shines is in fuel economy. Old-school driving enthusiasts who buy it with the manual transmission will get an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway; the automatic transmission is rated to return 26 city/35 highway. The manual version of the 86 only gets 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway, and the automatic 86 gets 24 city/32 highway. While the 124 Spider also gets 26 city/35 highway, it’s less powerful, making only 160 horsepower (compared to the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata’s 181 hp). Even though the base Cooper Convertible is more efficient with its EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28 city/36 highway, it’s also less powerful at 134 hp (plus, it costs nearly $2,000 more).
Amenities, Safety and Curb Weight
The base 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata comes with a few nice standard features, such as push-button start and a leather-wrapped parking brake handle; the base 2020 86 does not get either of those. Also, if you opt for the mid-grade Club trim of the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata, you’ll get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a premium nine-speaker Bose audio system, and HD radio. The 2020 Toyota 86 and 2020 Fiat 124 Spider don’t get HD radio at all, and the 124 Spider only receives a four-speaker audio system and no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Although the mid-level 2020 MINI Cooper Convertible can be outfitted with Apple CarPlay, you’ll need to upgrade with a package to enjoy it. Android Auto and HD radio are not available. To top it off, the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata also comes with a suite of active safety features through Mazda i-Activsense. This includes technologies such as lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. None of the other models in this competition receive any active safety features.
This type of car thrives on the lighter side since it translates to greater responsiveness and maneuverability, and the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata is the lightest among the pack compared here. At its maximum, its curb weight is 2,403 lb. compared to the 86’s maximum weight of 2,817 lb., the 124 Spider’s max of 2,476 lb., and the Cooper Convertible’s max of 3,120 lb.
