Overview

With so many crossovers vying for your attention, setting your sights on the perfect one can be a daunting task. It doesn’t help that many of them somewhat look alike, but the 2021 Mazda CX-3 stands out from the pack thanks to its upscale good looks, premium interior, abundant amenities, and competitive pricing. Although the 2021 Mazda CX-3 certainly has a slew of bragging rights, it still goes toe-to-toe with the Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Nissan Kicks, and Kia Soul. Even with such fierce competition, the 2021 Mazda CX-3 stands out amid its rivals.

Output and Fuel Economy

In comparing these vehicles’ base engines, the 2021 Mazda CX-3 is the most robust model mentioned on this page. Its standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant makes 148 hp, while the HR-V (141 hp), C-HR (144 hp), Kona (147 hp), Soul (147 hp), and Kicks (122 hp) are all less vigorous. What’s more, the 2021 Mazda CX-3 ranks well in fuel efficiency, returning an EPA-estimated 29 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. Compare that to the FWD HR-V (28 city/34 highway), the FWD-only C-HR (27 city/31 highway), the FWD Kona (27 city/33 highway), and the FWD-only Soul (28 city/33 highway). The FWD-only Kicks may be more efficient with 31 city/36 highway, but the 2021 Mazda CX-3 has a larger fuel tank (12.7 gal. with FWD vs. 10.8 gal.) so you can travel farther between fill-ups.

Deluxe Amenities, Tech and Safety

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 has rain-sensing windshield wipers that adjust their speed and turn on and off on their own depending on the amount of precipitation detected on the windshield. None of the other models in this competition offers rain-sensing wipers. Not only that, the 2021 Mazda CX-3 has standard push-button ignition and automatic climate control. If you want these convenient features in the Kona, HR-V, Kicks, or Soul, you’ll have to pay extra. Even though the C-HR has standard automatic climate control, it lacks standard push-button ignition.

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 has a standard E911 automatic emergency notification system that uses a GPS satellite receiver to notify emergency personnel of your location in the event of an accident. The HR-V, C-HR, Soul, and Kicks don’t come with a GPS response system. In addition, the 2021 Mazda CX-3 has a forward collision warning system with night-time pedestrian detection. No other model in this competition offers night-time pedestrian detection. In terms of overall safety, the 2021 Mazda CX-3 was awarded a five-star crash-test rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); the Kicks and Soul were only given four stars. The 2021 Mazda CX-3 was even named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS); none of the other models has been honored with a Top Safety Pick Plus designation.
