This three-row full-sized plug-in hybrid is offered in a simplified lineup of three trims: Preferred, Premium Sport, and Premium Plus. Their sophisticated plug-in hybrid powerplant combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 68-kW electric motor, producing up to 323 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is managed through an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. All trims have a rear-biased all-wheel drivetrain and are capable of towing as much as 3,500 pounds.
The 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV has been determined by the EPA to provide 26 miles of all-electric range, with its fuel economy rated at approximately 23 mpg around town and 28 mpg on the highway. All told with its combined electric range and hybrid operation, it offers a remarkable total driving range of up to 490 miles with a fully charged battery and full fuel tank.
Although it’s the entry-level choice, the Preferred is nonetheless packed with prime features, including leather upholstery in the first and second rows, heated power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, a leather-wrapped shift knob, a moonroof, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, retractable second-row window sunshades, six USB-C ports (two per row), and three zones of automatic climate control. Its convenience amenities include wireless phone charging, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power-operated liftgate, proximity keyless entry, push-button ignition, 60/40-split folding seatbacks for both the second and third rows, roof rails, heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, and automatic LED headlights.
The debuting Premium Sport trim adds extra flair with black exterior trim and a unique honeycomb grille. It also gains position memory for the driver’s seat, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, a hands-free liftgate, ambient interior lighting, and a 50/50-split third-row seatback, which reduces the seating capacity to seven. A 1,500-watt accessory power outlet gives adds to the utility factor.
The top-of-the-line Premium Plus goes back to the 60/40-split third-row seat but upgrades to heated captain’s chairs in the second row, keeping the maximum occupancy at seven. This trim also boasts superior Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, expanded ambient lighting, power-folding side mirrors with driver’s-side auto-dimming, a windshield wiper de-icer, and both 150-watt and 1,500-watt accessory power outlets.
Mazda’s i-Activsense safety suite comes standard on all three trims, encompassing forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, driver attention warning, rear seat alert, and vehicle exit warning. The two higher trims are bolstered with blind-spot assist, road-keep assist, head-on traffic avoidance assist, adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, and a secondary collision reduction system. The Premium Plus is fully loaded in the safety department, getting a surround-view camera, front cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking.
All trims come with a 12.3-inch center display that serves as the infotainment hub; it’s controlled via a rotary dial in the Preferred and enhanced with touchscreen capability in the Premium Sport and Premium Plus. The other standard multimedia features for all 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEVs consist of wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, voice recognition, HD Radio, and Bluetooth hands-free and streaming. While the Preferred has an eight-speaker audio system, the Premium Sport and Premium Plus move up to a top-shelf Bose audio system with 12 speakers and add onboard navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio.
