The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a front mid-engine sports car that can be enjoyed in a trio of choices: Sport, Club, and Grand Touring. A soft-top convertible roof is the norm, but there’s an RF version (only offered in Club and Grand Touring) that gets a retractable hard-top roof. The standard powertrain is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (181 hp and 151 lb.-ft. of torque) and a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic is optional on just the Grand Touring trim. With the stick, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata achieves an EPA-rated 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. With the automatic tranny, the highway fuel economy increases by 1 mpg.
The base-level Sport comes with a few features of note, such as LED headlights, proximity entry, push-button ignition, and leather wrappings for the steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake. The Club is elevated with a torque-sensing limited-slip differential, a rear lip spoiler, a front air dam, and heated seats. With the available Brembo/BBS Recaro Package (which is standard in the RF version of the Club), it will be transformed with Brembo front brakes with red calipers, 17-inch Dark Gunmetal BBS-forged wheels, Recaro sport seats, and an exclusive aero kit containing side-sill extensions and a black rear-bumper skirt. The Grand Touring doesn’t get the spoiler or air dam, but it adds adaptive front lighting, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming driver’s-side and rearview mirrors, black door-sill trim plates with stainless-steel inserts, a HomeLink universal garage door opener, single-zone automatic climate control, and black leather upholstery. For a richer aesthetic, Mazda offers Terracotta-colored Nappa leather upholstery as an option.
Mazda’s i-Activsense suite of active driving aids is standard in all trims (Smart City Brake Support, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning). Traffic sign recognition and automatic high beams are also included on the Grand Touring. Every trim has an E911 notification system as well. In the event of a severe collision where occupants are rendered unresponsive, E911 will automatically dispatch emergency responders to the location.
The standard multimedia system in the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata consists of a 7-inch touchscreen (it can also be controlled with voice recognition) with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, HD radio, and a six-speaker audio system with speed-sensing volume control and driver’s headrest speakers. The Club is upgraded with wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a deluxe nine-speaker Bose sound system that adds headrest speakers for the passenger. The Grand Touring tops the range with integrated navigation and a three-year subscription to SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link. All trims also come with a 12-volt power outlet and a pair of USB ports.
