Overview

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is a rare gem within the compact crossover class. That’s because unlike most of its segment peers, it has a uniquely upscale presence that draws inspiration from the brand’s Kodo design philosophy, which emphasizes beauty and precision over mass-market appeal. As a result, it has a captivating look that really stands out from the pack. Couple that with a standard all-wheel drive system, a sophisticated assortment of high-end amenities, and an available turbocharged engine, and you’ll find that there really is no other like it. For 2023, there’s a new Rhodium White paint color that honors the Japanese aesthetic of beauty in simplicity.

Trims and Performance

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 comes in eight trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Signature. The majority come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 187 hp and 186 lb.-ft. of torque, but the namesake of the 2.5 Turbo and 2.5 Turbo Signature is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 227 hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque (with premium fuel, those numbers jump to 256 hp and 320 lb.-ft.). Both powerplants are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift and Sport modes, and they also get standard all-wheel drive. According to the EPA, the non-turbo models return an estimated 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while the turbo versions achieve 22 city/27 highway. The maximum towing capacity across the board is 2,000 pounds.

Upscale Amenities

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 makes it a point to ensure a rich experience for its occupants. The 2.5 S comes with automatic on/off LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, dual exhaust pipes, 17-inch gray metallic wheels, remote keyless entry, push-button ignition, 12-volt power outlets, dual front-row USB ports, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, an overhead console sunglasses holder, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a one-touch 40/20/40-split fold-down and reclining rear seatback with a center armrest and cup holders. The extras on the 2.5 S Select are auto-leveling headlights, rear privacy glass, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry (the automaker’s proximity entry system), two-zone automatic climate control, rear AC vents, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, synthetic-leather seats with faux-suede inserts, heated front seats, illuminated vanity mirrors, and dual rear USB charging ports. The 2.5 S Preferred adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, a moonroof, and full-leather seats with driver’s position memory and front-passenger power adjustments.

The 2.5 S Carbon Edition goes for a unique aesthetic with its exclusive Polymetal Gray exterior paint color, black exterior elements, 19-inch wheels with a sleek black metallic finish, red leather upholstery, and black interior trim with red contrast stitching. The 2.5 S Premium builds from that with an adaptive front lighting system, signature LED headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, heated side mirrors, 19-inch machine-cut black metallic wheels, steering wheel paddle shifters, selectable Sport and Off-Road drive modes, and a 7-inch LCD meter display.

The 2.5 S Premium Plus has more amenities: a windshield wiper de-icer, power-folding side mirrors, a power liftgate, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a windshield-projected active driving display. In addition to that more potent engine, the 2.5 Turbo features gloss-black exterior accents, a Turbo badge, black leather seats with red contrast stitching, and a wireless phone charger. The 2.5 Turbo Signature tops the range with a mix of bright-finished and body-colored exterior elements, a Signature badge, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED interior lighting, brown Nappa leather seats, layered wood interior trim, and a black cloth headliner.

Driver-Assistance Technologies

Every 2023 Mazda CX-5 has blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. The 2.5 Turbo Signature ramps up the tech by adding traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, driver attention alert, reverse automatic braking, and traffic jam assist.

Infotainment and Audio

The 2.5 S has a choice infotainment system not usually seen in a base trim. It features a 10.25-inch touchscreen with voice recognition, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD radio, an SMS text messaging assistant, and a four-speaker audio system. The 2.5 S Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, and Premium all entertain with a six-speaker audio system, while the Premium Plus and 2.5 Turbo have a 10-speaker Bose with Centerpoint and AudioPilot, as well as SiriusXM satellite radio. The high-end 2.5 Turbo Signature receives integrated navigation and is compatible with SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link, which includes current information for traffic, weather, sports scores, fuel prices, and parking.
