What’s New for 2022?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 shows off a bit of an outward makeover, with smoother body lines and a more elegant overall appearance. What’s more, the redesigned headlights, with their rectangular LED bulbs, spread out from the grille to the sides like wings, bringing to mind a bird taking flight. The wheels show off fresh designs as well. The turbocharged versions of the 2022 Mazda CX-5 have additional styling elements that set them apart from the naturally aspirated (non-turbo) ones. The new model year’s 2.5 Turbo (which for 2021 was known as the Grand Touring Reserve) has a more athletic look than its sister trims. Gloss-black is the theme for the exterior accents, while on the inside it will get everyone’s attention with accents and stitching in striking red. The 2.5 Turbo Signature also stands out with its unified exterior color scheme, bright silver-finished wheels, premium Nappa leather upholstery, and woodgrain interior trim.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5’s performance and ride comfort have also been boosted thanks to the new Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) system and revamped stability-enhancing seats. The six-speed automatic transmission is now more responsive as well, and the suspension has an improved damping control structure plus a more rigid frame to help keep down outside noise and vibrations. All-wheel drive has also been made standard.

Trims and Powertrain

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 comes in eight trims: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Signature. The non-turbo grades get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 187 hp and 186 lb.-ft. of torque, while the two turbo trims are jolted by their turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 227 hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque with regular fuel and 256 hp and 320 lb.-ft. of torque with premium fuel. All trims receive a six-speed automatic transmission with manual and sport modes, as well as standard all-wheel drive.

Amenities By Trim

Mazda has equipped the 2.5 S with the likes of automatic on/off LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and push-button ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual front USB ports, and automatic climate control. The 2.5 S Select adds auto-leveling headlights, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry (which doesn’t require you to use the key fob to access the vehicle), a power driver’s seat, a rear-seat center armrest, two additional USB ports, dual-zone automatic climate control, simulated leather seats, heated front seats, and rear air-conditioning vents.

The 2.5 S Preferred has a moonroof, a power liftgate, leather upholstery, a power front passenger’s seat, position memory for the driver’s seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink. The sleek Carbon Edition shows off exclusive Polymetal Gray exterior paint, plus black or red leather seats, gloss-black interior and exterior trim, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob with vivid red contrast stitching. The 2.5 S Premium builds off the 2.5 S Preferred with heated side mirrors, an adaptive front lighting system, Mi-Drive selectable drive modes (Normal, Off-Road, and Sport), steering wheel paddle shifters, and a 7-inch LCD multi-information display. The 2.5 S Premium Plus gains a windshield wiper de-icer, power-folding side mirrors, a color head-up display, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. The mightier 2.5 Turbo grade shows off a more athletic exterior design with gloss-black accents, a Turbo badge on the rear liftgate, black leather seats with red contrast stitching, and a wireless phone charger. At the top of the ladder, the 2.5 Turbo Signature embraces a singular exterior color scheme, in addition to Nappa leather seats, woodgrain interior trim, combination LED and ambient interior lighting, a unique steering wheel, and a premium black headliner.

Active Safety Technologies

The 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, and 2.5 S Premium get a series of i-Activsense safety features: adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. The 2.5 S Premium Plus and 2.5 Turbo add traffic sign recognition, while the 2.5 Turbo Signature gets the remaining assortment of i-Activsense features (a surround-view camera system, rear parking sensors, reverse automatic braking, traffic jam assist, and driver attention warning).

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Mazda Connect infotainment system comes standard on the 2.5 S to supply a 10.25-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and a sound system with four speakers. The 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, and 2.5 S Carbon Edition all get six speakers, but the 2.5 S Premium and 2.5 Turbo upgrade to a 10-speaker Bose unit and SiriusXM satellite radio. Navigation is added at the 2.5 S Premium Plus level, while the 2.5 Turbo Signature is loaded with everything, including SiriusXM Traffic & Travel Link for traffic, weather, sports scores, and real-time information on fuel prices and available parking by actual location.
