2019 Mazda CX-5 Diesel in Springfield
Mazda has unleashed an all-new diesel version of their staple midsized crossover, the CX-5 Skyactiv-D. The Skyactiv-D model is available strictly in the loaded and luxurious Signature trim, and it blends clean and efficient diesel performance with i-Activ all-wheel drive. Its 2.2-liter turbocharged twin-turbo diesel engine makes 168 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque, for get-up-and-go that feels really smooth.
So, what are the benefits of a diesel engine in a passenger vehicle? For one thing, it gives you more miles to the gallon than the equivalent gasoline engine, and the torque output is more or less doubled due to the more controlled fuel burn and optimized ignition timing. While many drivers focus solely on horsepower as a performance indicator, torque is equally important, as it relates to the ability to pull heavier loads and accelerate more quickly from a dead stop.
What Exactly is Skyactiv-D?
Skyactiv-D is Mazda’s unique state-of-the-art diesel engine, which boasts a compression ratio of 14:1, giving it the lowest compression ratio of any diesel engine in the world. A low compression ratio means that the fuel burn is more controlled, which simultaneously saves fuel and increases power output – all with lower emissions because the fuel burns more cleanly. This Mazda diesel engine is eco-friendly and efficient, complying with the stringent emissions regulations without needing a nitrogen oxide aftertreatment system to purify the exhaust. It’s certainly a far cry from the diesel engines of old, many of which had a reputation for being dirty and causing pollution. Some specific features of Skyactiv-D include 20% better fuel efficiency thanks to the lower compression ratio (30 mpg on the highway compared to 27 mpg for the gasoline-burning CX-5), a newly developed two-stage turbocharger that provides a smooth response at low to high engine speeds, and much greater low- and high-end torque output.
Convenient Equipment and Technology
The CX-5 Skyactiv-D receives the same amenities as the Signature trim from the standard CX-5, meaning it gets all of the bells and whistles of a top-level trim. This includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, automatic heated power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers with de-icer, keyless entry and ignition, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, wood accents for the interior, leather seats, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with unique stitching, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, a moonroof, a power rear liftgate, power-adjustable driver and passenger seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 40/20/40 split one-touch fold-down and reclining rear seatback. The full treatment is provided for technology as well, with the Mazda Connect infotainment system complete with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite and HD radio, a six-speaker audio system, two USB ports, and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.
i-Activsense Intelligent Safety Features
Mazda’s exceptional i-Activsense suite of advanced driver-aid technologies comes standard on the CX-5 Skyactiv-D. It consists of enhanced radar cruise control with stop and go, lane departure warning with lane-keep assist, advanced Smart City Brake Support with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and E911 automatic emergency notification, which sends emergency personnel to your location in the event of an accident where the vehicle occupants are unable to call for assistance. Other highlights on the list of standard active safety equipment are a 360-degree view monitor and front and rear parking sensors.
