Is it really possible to make a full-size
crossover that handles with the agility of a well-tuned midsize
crossover? The engineers at Mazda have proven that is with the Mazda
CX-9, one of the most popular full-size crossovers on the market today.
The 2012 Mazda CX-9 (MSRP $29,385) isn't popular just because of
its sure-footedness; it's also a top choice for a number of other
reasons, not limited to attractive styling, luxurious interior
appointments, class-leading safety and outstanding value.
For 2012, the Mazda CX-9 is available in Sport, Touring and Grand
Touring models. All are generously equipped, starting with the Sport,
which offers full power accessories, remote keyless entry, tri-zone
climate control, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel
and a six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input. All Sport
models roll on 18-inch alloy wheels. A 10-speaker Bose® Centerpoint® Surround-Sound System is available in Touring and Grand Touring models.
Opt for the CX-9 Touring and you're welcomed with full leather
upholstery, heated, power-adjustable front seats and heated side
mirrors. Grand Touring models sit on 20-inch alloy wheels with a long
list of luxury features including keyless ignition, rain-sensing wipers,
a blind-spot monitoring system, Xenon headlights and tasteful interior
wood and metal trim.
Additional features include a rearview camera, DVD Navigation with
voice command and real-time traffic, a power-lifting tailgate, remote
engine starting, a sunroof, a nine-inch rear-seat DVD entertainment
system with Bose® Centerpoint® surround-sound, 11 speakers, an in-dash six-disc changer and SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio.
CX-9 power comes from a 24-valve 3.7-liter V6 that churns 273 hp
and 270 lb/ft of torque through a standard six-speed automatic
transmission with a manual shift gate and Adaptive Shift Logic, which
adjusts shift points to your driving style. This powertrain delivers
more torque than both the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander V6. It's
a powerful and efficient combination that returns up to 24 mpg highway
in front-wheel drive models. For those who want enhanced traction and
handling, AWD is an option, and both drivetrains can tow up to 3,500
pounds.

Inside the CX-9, all seven occupants will find copious amounts of
leg- and headroom, even if those occupants are all fully-grown adults.
Even third-row seating in the CX-9 is comfortable, and accessing it is
as simple as sliding the second-row seats forward with the touch of a
lever. In addition to sliding second-row seats, the second-row seatbacks
also recline and fold flat. With both the second and third rows folded
flat, the CX-9 can pack away a little more than 100 cubic feet.
It's rare to find a crossover like the CX-9 that's so versatile it
can feel at home both on the freeway and the backroads. On long
interstate jaunts, the CX-9 soaks up bumps, vibrations and road noise,
making daylong road trips feel like pleasure cruises.
Off the interstate, the car-like unibody design and four-wheel
independent suspension of the CX-9 gives it athletic handling prowess
that many other SUVs and even similar crossovers lack. Not only does it
equate to a better handling family vehicle, but the agility of the CX-9
also makes it a safer vehicle because it can maintain control better
during emergency maneuvers.
Speaking of safety, the CX-9 returns impressive safety performance,
receiving a perfect score ("Good") from the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety (IIHS) for both side-impact and frontal offset tests.
Even the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ranked
it perfect, giving the CX-9 a top five-star ranking for side and frontal
crash protection. Every CX-9 comes standard with Dynamic Stability
Control (DSC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Roll Stability Control
(RSC), as well as anti-lock braking.
The CX-9 has one of the highest resale values of all full-size
utility vehicles. In fact, the CX-9 was recently awarded the 2011 ALG
Residual Value Award for Best Full-Size Utility, retaining a higher
original value price over a three-year period than all segment
competitors.
